Is Palm Springs too hot in late September? We were thinking about going down there in late September, but the average high of 101 and average low of 71 makes us a little concerned that it's too hot. Has anyone been down there in late September and what did you think of the weather?

Weather is one of those things that is in the eye (or rather, in this case) the skin of the beholder. While I prefer snow to sun, I live in SoCal. I don't find the weather in Palm Springs in late September (unless there is a real heat wave) all that bad - often it isn't all that much different than LA in a heat wave. And it is a dry heat, which does make a difference to some people (especially to me - how I remember not wanting to move on certain hot, sticky, summer days in Texas when the temp was still in the 90's).

Having said that, if you are from an area that is normally cool and you don't like the heat, then don't go to Palm Springs before November without checking the weather. And real heat waves could happen in late September/early October - the timing of such things isn't constant between years.

It also depends on what you are going to be doing in Palm Springs. You can always beat the heat by swimming, taking the tram up into the mountains, staying in air conditioning (car, restaurants and stores) and so on. If you are planning on spending all of your time hiking in Joshua Tree or some of the other desert locations in the area then December would be better than September.

Would I object to going to Palm Springs in late September? Not at all. Have a good time.

We will be in Palm Springs this summer (staying at our other timeshare, Vista Mirage) for a week, and then going to WorldMark at Big Bear for a week. We were looking at the map and thinking of taking Hwy. 62 to Yucca Valley, Hwy. 247 to Lucerne Valley, and Hwy. 18 to Big Bear. Is this a good route from Palm Springs to Big Bear as far as road condition and scenery?

I've taken part of your route - Hwy 62 and Hwy 247 - but not Hwy 18 to Big Bear. The 2 routes I've done are good roads and go through the desert. If you have extra time and haven't already been there, I might suggest driving through Joshua Tree National Park instead of Hwy 62. However, it is out of the way and not fast (what road through a national park is fast?). If you have already been there or don't want to take the extra time, then stick to Hwy. 62.

My guess is that Hwy 18 would be very pretty - the other 2 ways I know up to Big Bear (from LA/Riverside area) are very enjoyable.

If you have a 4x4, there is a more direct dirt road up from Palm Springs. I've never done it (would like to someday) so I don't know what it would be like (interesting or just rough and boring). However, according to a map I was looking at, there are several organized camps along the road, so it can't be too difficult of a route. I'd love to know if anyone has driven it, and what they thought of it.

10 West to 30 North to 330 is probably the faster route. It's mostly city until you get on the 330 "Rim of the World" highway which does give you a nice panormaic view back down into San Bernardino and, depending on weather and visibility, most of the L.A. area.

Coming up 18 has always been referred to as the "back way" as I was growing up. I believe it's more desert than anything.

I am heading to Palm Springs for the first time and as my first WorldMark Vacation! I will be there in August and wanted to know if there are any nice spas in the area. Any suggestions for fun/low-key/inexpensive things to do??

Palm Springs in August.....OUCH!!!! Plan for lots of heat......take lots of sun screen and plenty of water.....

as for things to do out there.....as much or as little as you like......

i am from the southern california area and practically live in palm springs during the not so hot months of the year.....

El Paseo in Palm Desert is a great shopping community....with several nice restaurants.....

Several casinos for your gambling pleasures....The Spa Resort was just newly remodeled....that is a nice place....

Knott's Soak City Water Park....if you like the water parks....is always a hit with kids of all ages......

Downtown palm springs has several places to go to have dinner, enjoy a cocktail, and listen to live music...i have my favorite places to go there.....every Thursday night Downtown Palm Springs shuts down about 7 blocks of the main strip for a street fair.....that is a lot of fun....just be careful to not get lost in the detours..LOL...

Palm Springs IS a desert paradise....but you must remember that it is stil a DESERT....

and dont forget......Palm Springs has a wide array of golf courses to enjoy....me personally....no golf....lets go dancing!!!!!!!!

Have fun in Palm Springs......

If you like outdoor scenery, Joshua Tree National Park is interesting. There are a number of hikes in the area - since it will be hot, take the tramway up and hike up to San Jacinto. I've never actually done that but have always thought it would be fun, even if you don't go all the way to the top. It'll be much cooler up there than in Palm Springs.

I was in the area last February, actually staying in Desert Hot Springs. I went for the wonderful, natural, healing water. While there, I visited a Dr. Butler, a chiropractic orthopedist. I had been having chronic pain in my back and she helped me immensely. She's not your AMA type, in fact she doesn't even take insurance, but the cost was well worth it. I don't know about the rest of you, but having to deal with physical discomfort during a vacation is one of the worst possible downers in my opinion. So that's my tip for the Palm Springs area. Please forgive if this tip isn't kosher, I'm a new forum particiapant and still learning.

What is the location of the new desert resort in Indio? I saw something is in process near Washington and Miles, is that it? That's a great location, near the Tennis place. It is so beautiful out that end of the desert. The desert development is going nuts, lots of high-end housing developments, and great restuarants to match! And the controversial Super Walmart, which is really nice. When will we get an update on that project?

I found this on a news site with an article about the resort:

"The Mediterranean-style WorldMark Indio resort, scheduled to begin construction in Spring 2004, is located in the rapidly growing Shadow Hills area on 27.3 acres bordered by the Landmark golf course."

I will be flying in to Palm Springs airport in a few weeks to enjoy a few days at the resort. Hoping for sunshine but will take my chances ;-)

Do I need a car or can I get by with taking a taxi to the resort? Does anyone know what I can expect to pay?

Are there any grocery stores in walking distance to the resort?

We just went there before Christmas, and I would get a car if I were you. The closest grocery store is about 1 1/2 miles away, and there are a lot of fun things to do there, but all of them need a car to get there. There is a Denny's next to the resort, and I think a liquor store across the street.

Hi. Can anyone tell us about the 2 and 3 bedroom units at WM Palm Springs? Specifically, where they are located in the resort, whether they have washer/dryer, date of last remodel/update to furnishing? Any other words of wisdom? Thanks!

Hi All,

I am getting married next year and a few of my friends and I want to have a girl's weekend at one of the resorts in this area. The problem is, we can't decide between Indio and Palm Springs. The Indio rooms and resort amenities seem nicer but PS is closer to restaurants, spas, etc. Plus, I read some not so good reviews of the PS resort. Please give me your opinions on which resort we should stay at. We plan on spending a good amount of time at a resort but we also want to go out too.

This would be mid/late September of 2007. In case that makes any difference.

I also posted this in the Indio thread, I hope that is okay.

Thanks in advance!

The last time I was in Palm Springs was probably 5 years ago, and I haven't seen the new Indio resort. Since you are from Sacramento, I'd be tempted to take a couple of days off work and make a reservation during off-season (PS is occasionally available on bonus time when its off season) and visit both. Then decide where you want to stay after you've seen them both.

While some people really dislike Palm Springs, I didn't find it bad at all. It all depends on your expectations - if you are expecting a WOW glamour spot, you will be severely disappointed. If you are expecting a nice, clean, converted motel (that's what it was like 5 years ago), you'll appreciate it.

I like both resorts but I like Palm Springs better! It really depends on what you are looking for in a resort.

PS is MUCH smaller, has one medium size pool, gorgeous views of the mtns, is very close to happening spots in downtown PS for drinks, dancing, eats, shopping, etc. The units are decent. Some are much better than others. After the refurbishing it's pretty nice. Tall lush palm trees surround the pool. It is a refurbished hotel but we like it alot. There is some history about Sonny and Cher and the gazebo on site....

Indio is newer, smaller than WM normal units, LARGE pool, a lazy river, huge owners lounge, tiny little palm trees (it's new after all), and it's only close to golf and the golf course restaurant and bar. It will have shuffle board, basketball, and tennis eventually. (PS has none of those)

So, if you are looking for a place where you can lay out in the sun, float around in the pool, and get easily into town for more entertainment and dining PS is probably your best bet. The pool area can get kid-noisy in summer but fall is great! (Actually we were there over the 4th and it was just fine then as well!) On the other hand if you want to spend a lot of time at the resort hanging out, bbq'ing, floating on the lazy river with only occasional forays into town Indio is your place. (there is a casino within a couple of miles if that's your cup o' tea!)

Hope this helps!

Thanks mtngal and strawbears, I really appreciate the input. Great idea mtngal about going down and checking both resorts out, unfortunately I won't have the time or money to do this since I need to save up vacation time for my honeymoon and we already have a long trip planned next month. Plus, saving for a wedding doesn't leave a lot of extra money lying around, if you know what I mean!

I still can't decide. I really think that Palm Springs would be our best bet entertainment-wise but would let us down accomodations-wise. This is a tough call.

This may not be the right topic for this question, but it was the best I could see: Why can'tI find Palm Springs in the online reservation area? I used to be able to see it, but it seems to have disappeared. I can't see it in any region - Southern CA seems the best possibility, but it is not there, nor is it in the Northern CA, Nevada, or Southwest regions. When I look at the pulldown list for specific resorts, I see plenty of "CA-" locations, just not Palm Springs. Any ideas?

Dave

There has been some trouble with missing resorts on the website...call owner services and ask about it.

We will be arriving in Palm Springs on July 5, staying for a week. Plan on laying by the pool and relaxing. Was wondering if we can take a taxi to and from the airport and walk to most places from the resort? Grocery Shopping? Liquor Store? Shopping? etc.

we go to palm springs every year and absolutely love it. there are others that are there at the same time every year. i have no idea what all the complaints are about,. we are always in a studio and it is cozy and comfortable. and you are right across from the pool. it is like a little cottage (there are only 10 studios). we always book 13 months out just to get a studio!! maybe instead of just relying on what others say you should try it. we have also been in the one bedroom but like the studio better...of course there are only two of us. but if you want the palm springs area and dont like p.s. then go to indio...it is only 20 minutes further. meanwhile we LOVE going to palm springs and will continue our yearly jaunts to that resort for years to come!!!

yes you can take a taxi to the resort. there is nearby two shopping centers, lots of restaurants. thursday night is a nice night to go to town..they have booths and music and all...started by sonny bono and you can walk to it. i would not walk to the grocery store...first it is too hot and second a bit far so take a cab. but there is a lot within walking distance. walmart and such is too far to walk also...take a cab. you can walk to the grocery stores (other stores in the same area...albertsons on one side of the road and various stores and stater brothers on the other side of the road and more stores tehre but take a cab home with your food...maybe 5 minutes ride from the resort enjoy!!

no and after going there for three years found out there is a courtesy laundry for the studios...your room key fits the door...ask someone in the studios for help or advice.

I almost cancelled our reservations for Palm Springs UNTIL I read through all the comments. I'd like to suggest that posting should be listed by most recent date first. Posting from 2004 are not as valid as posting from 2009.
