Well, the first thing I would like to recommend is to visit the local wineries in Murphy's. We visited Ironstone, a must see, and also Chatom. Very nice. We went to the Calaveras Big Trees, however lots of snow and the part was actually closed at the time we arrived. Not even the Visitors Center was open. We couldnt hike like we wanted, you would definitely need the gear if you wanted to to do it. We then went to the California Caverns, this was a very interesting caving experience. The guides were very nice and informative. Not a lot of visitors this time of year so we actually had our own guide for our family of 5. Get prepared to get some mud on your shoes!!!! Fishing at Lake Melones is Ok, we caught one trout. The lake surroundings are beautiful. This is a place you want to see since it is only about 30 min from the resort. The town of AC, not so much to do. Very sleepy eyed community. I guess if you like antiques and museums you will enjoy.

Has anyone done the three hour adventure over at Moaning Caverns?? Was it worth the money?

We just came back from Angels Camp. We have been there four times and found something terrific and new. Downtown on Main St. there is a new place called Old Vines. It is an antique shop and wine bar. They just opened in Aug. and what is so great is that they are open until 10:00pm on Fri. and Sat. 8:00pm Tues through Thurs, closed Sun and Mon. There is finally something to do downtown after 5pm besides the movies. You can also purchase cheese and crackers and other treats to go with the wine. New concept, great owner! We saw a flier in the Worldmark lobby.

When I tell people about Angels Camp and what a good time I had they usually look at me like I'm crazy! But in fact there is plenty to fill your time whether you are on a romantic getaway or a family trip.
You can have a nice dinner with dessert and wine at the Golf Course restaraunt next to the resort.
There is the Big Trees Park with marked trails and maps that take you through an amazing forest filled with great photo ops.
Numerous Caverns within an hour or so with many different activities at each. One even has ziplining and a couple of other daring activities.
You can walk the old town area and browse the thrift stores and small shops.
Just a few ideas!

We spent 4 nights at Angels Camp in early October, had a great time with friends. We had a HUGE three bedroom unit, very nice, very clean. Only had one problem, dishwasher malfunction, but staff is quick to take care of problems. The town of Murphys is nearby, great place to taste local wines, you can walk along the main street and sample at several tasting rooms. Our favorite was Solomon Bros. extremely friendly, hospitable. Murphys and Angels Camp are also great if you are into antique and second hand stores, our wives had a great time. If you like hiking and great scenery, drive up Hwy 4 to Calaveras Big Trees State Park. We hiked into what they call the south grove. The giant Sequoia redwoods are just spectacular, but you can't see them from the road. About a 5-mile round trip hike, but definitely worth it. Don't forget your camera. We would defintitely recommend this resort to friends.

best things to do while in Angels Camp
1.take a side trip to Yosemite, if you've never been, its about a 2.5 hour trip, we stayed one nite in the park so we could have two days to explore, which is the bare minimum. Glacier point is the best view. 2. Sutter Mine tour 3. Calaveras County Museum in San Andreas 4. The town of Murphy's for wine tasting 5. Mercer Caverns 6. Antique hunting in Jackson, Sutter City, and Amador City

First I have to say that Angles Camp is Fantastic. I have stayed a couple of times and brought a friend with me. They were very impressed and enjoyed the stay. Locations is great. I love wines and it is perfect for that.
The reason I am posting this, is about the concerts at Ironstone Winery. I don't know, but I don't think I am breaking any rules. They do thier concert series and June 20th is Chicago with the Dobbie Brothers. I had reservations and everything to go. Problemn at work came up and I can't go now. If anyone is interested in (2) tickets which include buffet dinner, let me know. My email is guido232 at yahoo. We can talk about getting them.
Thanks, and you will love Angles Camp A+++++

While we were at Angels Camp 2 weeks ago, we went whitewater rafting with the Whitewater Excitement organization (www.whitewaterexcitement.com) and rafted down the South fork of the American River up at Coloma (1 1/2 hrs north of Angels Camp). That was very fun and the cool water felt good as it was 95 degrees outside. We also went horseback riding the next day with Horse and Barrel (organized through Moaning Caverns--but probably would be better if you went directly through H&B as Moaning didn't seem too knowledgeable when we arrived there)up in Murphys. We spent the rest of that day driving along the Ebbets Scenic Byway (highway 4), visiting the Calveras Big Trees State Park and taking pictures along the way of all the snowy mountains, lakes, waterfalls, etc. Only warning: get your gas tank filled before leaving Angels Camp. The eastbound trip takes up a lot of gas and when we arrived at Markleeville (the end of the byway) we found a two pump gas station that was not working so we had to proceed further on and were poached at Sierra Pines at $3.89/gallon (compared with $3.18/gallon at Angels Camp). The return westbound trip uses less gas as it is more downhill. We came up from North San Diego county and we found that traveling up the 395 was much more scenic/enjoyable than going up the 5 and 99 but it took us 10 hours to get to Angels Camp--would highly recommend it to others! We also agree that Mike's Pizza is great!

Angels Camp or Clear Lake?
My mom and I are interested in going somewhere for a weekday stay (prob 3-4 nights max, Mon-Thur). We're looking for a resort with things to do nearby (I know Yosemite is about 2 hours away and I want to check that out if we stay at AC), with nature in mind. My mom likes to see and experience nature-- water, trees, that sort of thing.
We've stayed at Clear Lake before and had a good time-- would you recommend AC over CL?

Just returned from 5 nights at Angels Camp with family of 4, kids are 6 and 9.
Day 1 - took a trek up the road to Calaveras Big Trees Park - Definitely a must do with the kids and the walking loop. Be sure to get the guide for $.50 when you start the tour. It describes the significance of some the trees in the park. Also took lunches and bikes. At lunch along the side of the Stanislaus River a bit farther in the park. Rode bikes from Beaver Creek to Old Railroad grade. A bit of a climb for the little guy but we all made it. Once you hit the grade - nice, easy riding the rest of the way.
Day 2 - Explored Mercer Cave. Very cool place for kids. Good tour guides. Had "panning" activity there for the guys. It was fun for them, but it seemed like a very good way to make some $$ on touristas. Returned to AC to play in pool and relax.
Day 3 - Went to Springfield Trout Farm! Again - fun for kids. Careful - No catch and release there. You buy what you catch. Can get REALLY expensive. But - memories of catching fish - worth it. They clean and pack them for you on ice. Dinner out at "V" in Murphys, CA. FANTASTIC dinner. Owner was the Head Chef at Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite for 15 years. These folks can cook!
Day 4 - Brought bikes to Yosemite Valley and rode loop with the boys. Great activity. Flat ride for the most part. Totally recommend it.
Day 5 - Relaxed at AC.
Good times all the way around!!

I think there is a ton more to see and do at AC. Surprising to learn all there is to do around there. 2 hour drive to Yosemite Valley is very cool - goes by rather easily with all the scenery.

I have to agree. Though I haven't stayed at Clear Lake, I have driven by and it seems like if you're not boating, there's not much to see or do. It's kind of stuck between wine country and I-5.

We are new members and just slotted a week at AC this coming Saturday. I see there are 4 golf courses (one right next door), and am wondering if anyone has thoughts on which ones to play, and what the best $ deals might be.
