Glad to hear such a good report about my favorite of all our resorts. Older it may be but it is still favorite. We like the small, homey feeling and the laid back style of it. We have always found the staff to be friendly and most helpful.
Our favorite building is the "C" bldg as it never puts the sun directly on the lanai. There are times we are there during the day and it is nice to be able to sit out there and not fry in the sun.
Once again, glad you had a good time on "My" island. Did I mention that I LOVE Kauai?

Kapaa Shores is a good location, but the 2 lane traffic can be horrendous at early morning and late afternoon. The hotel is quaint, room we hd was right where we could see the ocean. We enjoyed it a lot! Clean, nice kitchen.

OK,for those of you that have traveled to Kauai, if you had a choice between the Kapaa SHore property or the Wyndham Bali Hai, which one would you choose? I have two bedroom booked at both and can't decide between the two. Trying to consider everything, property amenities, local attractions, etc... have two kids ages 11 and 8
Your help is greatly appreciated

We stayed at the Bali Hai, our unit was huge and had a limited view of the ocean (if you stood on the bed and looked between the trees you could see the ocean. The roosters were most annoying at 0400. I think they are trying to trap and relocate the roosters but they keep finding their way back. There is a fine if the roosters get in your unit so caution the kids to keep the doors closed.
Kapaa Shore is on the beach. I haven't seen inside the rooms but lobby, grounds and gift shop was very nice. I didn't see as many roosters at Kapaa. Kapaa is more centrally located, closer to the airport and less threat of bridges being closed when it rains. I think you would be happy in either location both were beautiful.
We were new to the Wyndham sales pitch and they were persistant.

Afternoon:
We have stayed in both and both do have their strengths and weaknesses. Kapaa Shores does have the ocean right there and swimming a block or two away. Grocery is across the street and a multitude of restaurants.
Bali Hai has a pool that may be more attractive to your kids. I don't remember any slides or anything. I don't remember any roosters either.
Kapaa Shores any day!!!!

We stayed at this resort for a week March 2010 on a three island WM tour. The one bdrm on the ground floor was in excellent condition. We could have breakfast on the Lanai overlooking emaculate lawns. The pool and BBQs were well maintained and much enjoyed. Really enjoyed the owner evening on the lawn by the BBQs with hors d'oeuvres. A excellent opportunity to meet other owners.
The resort is centrally located for touring north and south and excellent beaches can be found in either direction.
We found the seals sleeping on the beaches (undisturbed) a novelty that we did not see on the other islands. The waterfalls were a lot of fun to find and see some of the rural areas inland.
As far as AC, the Trade Winds were so strong that we actually had to close the windows at night.

So, we can actually walk to the beach from Kapaa Shores resort and swim in the ocean?

Check out this view of the beaches. Baby beach is an easy walk from the resort. http://www.resource4hawaii.com/kauai/travel-kauai.htm

We just returned from our Hawaiian vacation. We were at Kapaa Shores for about 10 days. It was great. The view was lovely, and our room was just what we expected. The staff was wonderful and couldn't have been more helpful. The resort is located in a central point on the island so that it is not a very long drive to see everything to the north and south. We checked out the Bali Hai location while we were there, but were very glad that we had selected Kapaa Shores. Bali Hai is located to the north, and is a longer drive to see everything around the island and it is farther to get to a swimming beach than it is from Kapaa Shores. I would not hesitate going to Kapaa Shores again. The laid back feeling is just what we wanted so that we could relax and enjoy our time on the island.

We stayed here in 2009 and loved the place. The rooms were clean and the staff was great. We liked the gathering of visitors at the pool every night. The only down fall was the location it was hard to get in and out of driveway at night. They need a light in front of the road. We liked it so much we have been trying to book time here again but always full. Hopefully in Jan. 2011 something will open up.

I am not writing to all of you to scare you, but to advise you of a security matter that happened to us while on vacation in Kauai at Kapaa Shores. Attached is a picture of the resort where we stayed, on the bottom floor on the right, on the end. Building C, Room 127. See the little window to the left of the sliding glass door. That is where someone removed the screen in the middle of the night and using an outdoor patio chair to reach the window, climbed in through the window while we were asleep. These pictures were taken before the incident or otherwise we would have gotten a close up. This happened on our last day (day 7) sometime between 11:30pm and 5:30am on 7/16/2010.

They took the laptop computer off the breakfast bar along with the wifi plug. They proceeded to the back of the condo to the bedroom and crept along side the bed and got my purse which was under the nightstand bottom shelf. All of my jewelry was in the drawer of the nightstand so they didn't get that. Also they did not get Bobby's wallet which was in the nightstand drawer on his side of the bed. When Bobby woke up he found the sliding glass door open with my purse and his carryon bag sitting right next to the door. The best news was they DID NOT take any of my ID or credit cards, just the $110 cash inside my purse.

We were told by the police that they had been in our unit for a robbery report before. Also, the desk clerk said the unit had been broken into in April. We are now investing in a portable motion detector alarm to take along with us when traveling. I am sure we will ask for a unit on a higher floor than ground level. It was so ideal because we were right on the ocean and close to the hot tub, but toooooooooo convenient for a crook.

And the good news is we didn't wake up so no confrontation or screaming, etc. The police said its better to not confront a burglar because you don't know what they are on or what weapons they may have.

So please be careful, who would ever dream you were not safe inside a locked condo but I guess there are plenty of bad people out there to take advantage of any little situation.

"Staying anywhere in HI is relaxing, but it is really hard to recommend risking one's vacation in one of the 1 bedroom units at Kapaa Shores. "

Why is it really hard to recommend? People who will take a vacation should be responsible in their vacations they should take the safety precautions.

My wife, mother and I stayed here last week for 3 nights (2 bedroom for two nights and then a 1 bedroom for the 3rd night). After reading some of the concerns about the unit robbery, I was a little concerned about our safety and security as well. Frankly, I was afraid this would be in a bad area (if there is such a thing in Hawaii), or a really rundown resort. Our experience wasn't anything close to that concern. In fact, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in both unit sizes. Upon arrival we were graciously greeted by wonderful and attentive staff and weren't even asked for a timeshare presentation! WOOHOO! Our unit(s) was very clean and comfortable with a wonderful view of the courtyard/pool and the ocean gently breaking on shore. The Kapaa resort is perfectly located on the island to split the distance around the island and there is plenty of modern stores/restaurants right across the street. Surprisingly, I didn't notice any road noise or other disturbances while relaxing on the lanai (patio) in the mornings/evenings. The only issues we came across was a ground floor unit's tub being recaulked and a strong chemical compound smell found its way to the upstairs units and many complaints followed from other tenants and myself. Fortunately the maintenance staff were able to evacuate the noxious odor overnight, otherwise I would have been more aggressive with my complaint. The lack of A/C in the units wasn't an issue because the trade winds brougt a nice breeze round the clock and the outside temp. never got above 82F...although I can see where it would be nice to dehumidify the air and cool the unit down a little more during truly hot days. Also, Worldmark should put some signage out front indicating you're at the right place.."Kapaa Shore Resort Condominiums" signage would've been confusing if the rental car folks at the airport didn't warn us about the lack of Worldmark signs. Overall, I would rate Kapaa Shore a 9 out of 10 and plan to utilize this resort in the future.

May I ask what precautions you suggest? Locking the sliding door and closing the windows seems like it should be precaution enough. The perp who broke into the unit disabled the security light, removed a screen and climbed through a small window. Once he was inside all he had to do was unlock the sliding door to get back out.

I think they are lucky they slept through it because who knows what might have happened if they woke up -- especially if the guy was on drugs or something.
