What's there to do at Kapaa Shores? Perhaps you went snorkeling, learned to snuba-dive or took the big plunge and went for your scuba certification while on vacation. We want to hear about what you did and saw while staying at the resort.

Snorkaling great on Northern part of Island at Tunnels Beach. A reminder though is buy an underwater camera here because you will save a fortune. It took us about 5 minutes to shoot a complete camera full.

Kayaking to the falls was fun.
I want to hike some of the Napali coast. Trail Head is at the North Shore
Helicopter ride was okay. Wouldn't do it again
Boat tour to see the Napali Coast was great. Snorkeling included with most tours. Also Dolphins did a swim along and saw some whales in the distance.
Waimea Canyon fun drive beautiful views
Snorkeling - rent snorkel gear for a week and get the snorkels maps.
Scuba Dive
Go to the Light House and see the whales if you didn't from a boat tour. (Seasonal)
Go on plantation tours
There is alot to do on Kauai. Especially if you like the outdoors.

We took our rental car off roading and got some interesting looks from the locals. (not recommended)

Before our arrival, we contacted the resort staff to help book us some excursions. Natalie at the office was great! She helped book us the Secret Falls, Kayak/Hike,Swim combo. Kayak through Wailua River, parked and hiked about 2 miles to a really great and tall waterfall for swimming. We didn't have a lunch, but we had great local snacks.

We adventured to South shore for Kauai ATV. It was my first time! We saw two waterfalls, not huge, but pretty. Saw where they filmed Jurassic Park, 6 days 7 nights & Raiders of the Lost Ark. These roads are private and are only available thru this tour, went through a long man-made tunnel. Go to Lapperts for coffee or waffle cone ice cream.

Then for all ages, we booked a Polynesian Adventure Waimea Canyon and River Tour. The bus picked us up at the resort on a big air conditioned bus. Went to Spouting Horn, Waimea Canyon which they call the little grand canyon of Hawaii. Went to the Wailua River to get on a flat motor boat to the Fern & Grotto walk (all cemented) and then back on the boat for a little hula show, then the bus took us back to the resort.

It was a great time. I wish we could have stayed longer. If you're going to North Shore to Kee beach, parking is limited. Make sure you go early. This is a great place for Sunset, you may also do some hiking there.

I recommend buying some Deep Woods Off for mosquitos, especially if you're allergic, plenty of sunscreen, waterproof cameras and I recommend that you book all your excursions the earliest in the morning.

We didn't get to do, but want to next time is to the Tubing. It's an old water ditch. They give you an inner tube to sit in, a helmet with flahslight because you will going through tunnels that's dark. It just gives you a nice ride down. Great for kids, check for age requirements.

Didn't get to go horseback riding either, all for next time.
Our favorite sandy bottom beach was Lydgate Park, just 5 minutes from the resort. Great for snorkeling. Bring bread and feed the fishes or Walmart sells a tube of food for the fishes.

My favorite things to do in Kauai:

Surfing at Poipu
Captain Zodiac tour of NaPali Coast (Best experience of my life-front of the boat hanging on for dear life!!! Great fun)

Jumping off of the rope at Kipu Falls (Better bring some guts)
Snorkeling at the end of the north road. Cant remember the beach, but just go to the end of the road, you'll find it. Oh, "Key-ee" beach I think.

Burgers and Bubba Burgers. Ummm.

Pedro's BBQ about a mile south of the worldmark on the inland side of the hwy.

Shave ice with ice cream on the bottom (Good stuff)

Tip: buy a pair of shoes at the Wal-Mart and toss them on your way home. I bought a pair for $3 and it was worth it. I actually kept them because they saved my but on a hike.

We hiked part of the Kalalau trail on the North Shore, and it was absolutely stunning. Just take the road along the North Shore until it ends, and the trailhead is right there. You can't miss it. I'll post some pics ASAP, and I hope they will inspire some of you to do at least part of the trail, even if hiking isn't really your thing. The things you will see will stay with you forever, I promise.

Waimea Canyon is also a must see.

If you go to see Waimea Canyon, make sure to follow the road all the way to the top (last 3 miles are a little bumpy, but nothing a car can't handle). At about mile 18, you might see a sign that says that the road further is closed to traffic. Park and walk the rest of the way (about 1 mile with several ups and downs, but it is paved) and you will be in for a treat. Your reward is an astonishing view of the Na Pali coast, and because it takes a bit of a walk to get there, you will probably have the view all to yourself. Again, I'll post pics ASAP.

We went on the morning Kauai Sea Tours Catamaran trip. We left from Allen Harbor. Great staff, lovely boat, fabulous views of the Na Pali Coast. We got in a pod (?) of Spinner Dolphins. There were about 100 of them. Amazing. Then we saw some Bottlenose Dolphins too right by the boat. We also saw Sea Turtles and even saw one snorkeling. The snorkeling was a bit rough because of the waves that day. We didn't get to take the zodiac to the shore because of the wave conditions (too bad). We had lunch on board - good food - nothing spectacular but plenty of that and beverages. We really enjoyed it. Some people said you have to go from the North shore, but we were satisfied.

We also did a Kayak tour up the Wailua River. You kayak up the river for about a mile, then get off and hike about a half mile into Secret Falls (not too secret any more). I like the group we went with because they leave first in the morning so there aren't as many people at the falls. When we were leaving, they were all arriving. Got crowded. We had a snack at the falls, and then swan in the pool and under the waterfall. It was fun. Then you hike back out and kayak back down the river. We were novices, but did just fine. I would like to kayak again. It was Wailua Kayak Adventures that we went with housed right in Kapaa. We walked from the resort. So fun and beautiful.

Snorkeling is just great. I liked Ke'e Beach best, but Tunnels, Hideaway and Poipu are good too. Lydgate is also good, and a great place to get the hang of things. Good for kids. Snorkel Bob is where we rented our stuff.

Body boarding and body surfing are also very fun. Be careful of rocks and waves! We were amazed at all the sand that came back with us after these activities. Worth it though.

Hiking is very good although we didn't do enough of it to suit me! So many things to do and not enough time!

Enjoy,
Verdoonie

HI there Verdoonie,
We dit the NaPali tour from the north shore - out of Hanalei. But we did it because the boat company was owned by a group of guys that included my brother-in-law and it was comped. But we loved being in a rigis sided catamarran much better than in a zodiac boat. WE had nice comfortable seats with backs to lean on. There is absolutely no way we would go on a zodiac. I know lots of people do and love them. Just not for me.

People have said that going from the North Shore gives you more time at the NaPali Coast, and it takes a shorter time to get to them. How long did it take you to get to the cliffs? We loved the catamarran also. Our family had done the zodiac boat thing on the Big Island, and we loved that. I think this one would be to long. We were going to take the zodiac from the catarmarran at the NaPali to the short to see some anchient Hawaiian site, but the surf was too rough, and we didn't get to do that. That would have been fun. Enjoy your planning for this trip, Myrna. Can't wait to hear about it.

I think it took about 2 hours because we went slow and looked for dolphin, turtles and had a history lesson on the island too. Once we got up there, we only went into one grotto/cave because it was an open air one. The captain wouldn't take the boat into any of the closed caves because of the fowl life inside the caves. He didn't want to take a chance of any boat exhaust doing any damage. The open air on wouldn't do that. It was so beautiful inside. We saw a lot fo the zodiacs going into almost every cave. Didn't think that was good. He did back the boat up to the mouth of one of them because it has a waterfall. We got a bit wet. but our gear stayed dry because they provide you with "dry bags" to p0ut your cameras, etc. Thie first one was in the hump season so they didn't provide lunch, but gave us snacks and pop and water. It was close to the time when the seas get too rough to even venture up there. Two days later, the sailboats on Hanalei Bay were listing to their sides because of the wind and rough seas. Their boat doesn't run during rough seas at all. This company is coast guard approved and licensed. The lack of those licenses is what drove a lot of companies to Port Allen several years ago. The powers that be said only the coast guard approved and licensed boats could stay in Hanalei. there are 2, maybe moren= now if some have been licensed. There are so many restrictions that come with the license, like total number of passengers per boat, per day. I don't remember all of them. The second time was on an off day for the boat company (Sunday was family time for the boat and any of the 3 owners could arrange to use it for the day. When we were there, my brother-in-law got the boat and took out the family. the kids had a ball. They got to fish, didn't catch a big one. They had fun jumping off the boat over and over again. Great Hawaii memories

Next year will be our first trip to Kauai through worldmark. Can't wait to go! I've been to Kauai many times and lived there shortly in my youth. So much to do and see, ziplining, horseback riding, A.T.V.ing, tubing down the old water canals through the taro fields, kayaking...I know Kauai is the most beautiful place on earth and her people our warm and friendly. Time has slowed there, so if you want night-life go to Oahu or Maui. If you want paradise, you're in the right spot. I will not share my favorite swimming spot because I'm not gonna ruin a great secret! Mahalo!

The ocean in front of Kapa'a Shores is not swimmable, however, there is a beach called Baby Beach that is a couple of blocks away and we took the toddler's there last April. Lyndgate Park, which is a few miles away also has a safe area for little ones to swim.

Get the book, "Kauai Revealed" to find the best beaches and activities for little ones (and big ones too).

I just wanted to tell you to be sure and take the kids, especially the 6 yr old to Lydgate Park. They have an enclosed area for kids. They have lifeguards too. In the park is also a great playground that was partially designed by kids. they chose the decor and actually made some of the things used in it. You can check out this great community project at http://www.kamalani.org This bridge was built all with volunteer labor and everythign was donated. The website has pictures of construction and everything. Very interesting. Now that I have said that, I haven't checked out the site for a while so hope it is still there. It is still there and there are a lot of links to see what they have done!

Hi again,
I would defuinitely rent aheado of time. Especially if yu have a particular type of car in mind. I researchesd every company online, including the taxes and fees before I rented 2 cars in 05 when we went last time. I will also reserve way ahead for
Most of t6hem do not req2uire a credit card at the time pf reservation and that is the way I would go. We chose Alamo because the agent told us that we would not have to pay an additionla daily fee for a second driver. When we got to Honolulu, however, the agent told us we did. I took my confirmation paperwork out of my notebook and showed it to him, complete with the agents name we reserved through,. We didn't pay extra. Don't get the collision damage insurance either. check with you ins. carrier at home for your coveragte. Wehae state farm and we did have a fender bender on one trip (not me, but6 my husband). We went to the state farm agency and they took care of everything so all we had to do at the airport was give them the paperwork. I also took several pictures of the damage, - just in case the rental company tried to bill us form more than what was dented. You don'[t NEED to add ANY insurance to your rental, ify you have coverage at home.

We have made reservations for the Bali Hai resort in Kuai, but I can't find any information on the resort at the Worldmark site. Does anyone know where I can see photos of the rooms? I have a two bedroom and I've seen photos from off the Worldmark site, and they look wonderful, but I'd like to see from the owners point of view...

Bali Hai is not a Worldmark property that I am aware of. Perhaps you did an exchange? Kapa'a Shores is the only real WN property on Kauai.

Here is link to trip advisor that has real people reviews. You have to scroll down to them.
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-...uai_Hawaii.html

I see that it is a Wyndham property however.

Has anyone gone scuba diving in Kauai? Where? With who? and general costs? Is this forbidden island dive trip worth the day long trip and three dives? Let me know if you have done any diving- will be there in August of 2009.

Unfortunately, because Kauai is the wettest island and the only island with navigatable rivers, the viz is not as great as Maui, or even Oahu or Hawaii. Sure it can be decent but 60 feet may be the best encountered depending on preceeding days weather conditions. Otherwise, the critters and sights off Kauai our comparable if not better than the other islands.

However,if viz is a priority, by all means do the forbidden island trip. It is a decent trip with sightings of many types of mammels, large fish and birds together with the beauty of the landscapes. Just take seasickness andetotes necessary as a precaution.

While we prefer Fathom Five because of their small dive parties and taking care of our equipment between dives, we did have success with Seasport Divers to the Forbidden Island last year since FF did not have their boat up yet. J

You can get details on both on the web. Or obviously the
Kauai Revealed guide that all prudent HI travelers should acquire before visiting the islands.

Our last 3 days in Hawaii will be at Kapaa Shores where we want to visit gardens and museums. Please suggest some. We will have a rental car
Both of us are retired seniors, with fixed incomes, so any cheap or free ideas would be greatly appreciated. It's my husbands first time in the islands, and only my second (my first was traveling with my 84 year old mother who's idea of fun was bed with a book at 8:30pm).

Thanks for any and all suggestions you may have. I really appreciate the food and restaurant stuff you've already written here.

Hi,

I'll post some links to web sites on Kauai for you.

Haven't been here but it sounds lovely.

http://www.naainakai.org/index.html

http://www.ntbg.org/ - recommended by Frommers guide

This site starts at the museum in Lihue but if you look on each side, there are links to many diferent places to visit and sights to see. Like on the left side are historical sites like the Bellstone, Capt Cook Monument, etc. I think this site will get you more information than you will have time to take part in.

http://www.hawaiiweb.com/kauai/html/sites/kauai_museum.html

If the weather is clear, a drive to the Waimea Canyon provides an amazingly beautiful vista when you get there. It is the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. If possible and you do the drive, go all the way to the top to Kokee National Park and go into the museum there, Be aware of the chickens, they have the right of way on Kauai.
If you have any specific questions, please PM me. I just got home from there just a month ago. It was my 9th stay on Kauai, maybe the 10th. I'd have to think about that.

I LOVE Kauai the very best of all the islands.

Myrna

The most fabulous thing we did was go snorkleing on a 6 hr boat trip that sails out 17 miles south of Lahue. We booked thru Bali Hai Resort/ Worldmark. Our condo was great. I've ever slept on a bed more comfortable than the one at this resort. Anyway...the boat trip included lunch and drinks as well as all equipment for snorkleing. Cost was about $70 each which considering the length of the trip and all that is included was well worth the price. We say the beautiful rugged coastline, spinner dolphins and sea turtles. The boat staff was unbeleivable. Each staff person took time to sit and chat for 20-30 minutes with someone on the cruise. They answered questions and talked about what it is like to live in Kauai.
We also took a small plane tour of the island which was nice but not fabulous like the boat tour.
After our snorkleing trip we stopped at a coffee plantation for some samples and shopping (we love coffee). The plantation is not far from the port Hanapepe.
While the beaches and slow pace of the island is breathtaking...watch out for the chickens and roosters. They're not only EVERYWHERE but they are aggressive and will take your meal off your plate even in a resturant. I;m not kidding. Birds have no fear in Kauai.
