What's there to do in New Orleans?? What isn't there to do!! We want to hear about what you did and saw while staying at this resort. Did you visit the Vieux Carre' (French Quarter), learn to cook cajun style, take a trip down the mighty Mississippi, visit one of the fine old southern plantations, or the bayou? Give us the scoop.

Visited July 2016. Loved this location. Quiet at night, easy access to everything. We took the streetcar trolley everywhere and walked. Carrollton, NOMA, the quarter. So easy to get around and only blocks from amazing shopping along Magazine street. Great location!

We were there for 5 days. Here are some things that we did together with our siblings:

We took a street car to Canal Street. That hooked us up with the water front, shopping, etc. (I recommend the all day 3$ RTA pass.) We also all climbed into my brother's rental car and drove to see all of the beautiful houses in the area.

We bought tickets for the hop-on/hop off tour. It was the best way to see the city and to get off where we wanted to go. THere were also other tours you could buy as well.

We went to the Garden District and looked at old graveyards. That was interesting.

FOr my husbands birthday, we took a Jazz Cruise down the Mississippi river. THat was fantastic! THe food was better than expected (the catfish was the best), and the Dixieland music was fantastic. THe cruise itself was great and the captain was informative.

We drove our car to Sidell and went on a swamp tour. THat was a great way to see more of the beautiful country that there is down here. We saw tons of wild life--LOTS OF GATORS.

We did go down the famous Bourban street. I would totally pass on that. Nothing really but the stetch of puke, pee, and poop, and scantily clad women. Not really our scene--But we had to do it to say that we did it. Frenchman street wasn't much better but I found the music there to be much more inviting.

I will be visiting this resort for the first time at the end of June. I have some friends that live there and have made some recommendations. www.freetoursbyfoot.com offers free walking tours of the Garden District, French Quarter, Cemetaries, etc. These are two-hour tours and you just tip them what you feel it was worth (from what I researched from $10-$20, mainly $20). Mardi Gras World--they offer free pickup at various hotels. Oak Alley Plantation and the Laura House Plantation. Swamp tours. Take the St. Charles Street Car to view beautiful houses. Carriage rides around the quarter offer a lot of history. In the French Quarter there are many historic homes to tour: The 1850 House, Beauregard-Keyes House, Gallier House, Hermann Grima House. If you like museum--The Cabildo (one of the most historically significant building in America). The National World War II Museum. For music, the locals go to Frenchman Street. For shopping, Magazine Street (the best stretch is from Jackson to Louisiana).

IMPORTANT: If you are touring the cemeteries by yourself, please be cautious. There has been reported thieves. Also, the French Quarter is not the safest place. Don't go wandering around out at night by yourself. Stick to streets that are populated--not on the outskirts. You will know when you stop seeing people.

We just got back from our first trip to N.O. and had a great time. The National WWII Museum is a must and it is definitely worth spending a little extra to see the 2 movies. No Boundries, narrated by Tom Hanks, we thought was extraordinary. We enjoyed going to the Oak Alley Plantation, but because we went with a tour we didn't get as much time to listen and explore as we would have liked. We also went on a small air-boat swamp tour and it was a blast. The French Quarter and the French Market was always enjoyable, but we found the iconic Bourbon street to be somewhat seedy with strip clubs and smelled like vomit. We would recommend going one block towards the river and come in on Royal, it had lots of cool shops etc.. We also took the hop on hop off double decker tour bus, and paid the 10$ extra to turn it into a week long bus pass and that pays for the walking tour of the Garden District, and Cemetery. (we didn't do the latter)We used the bus 3 or 4 days of our week long stay to help get places, and it was a nice alternative as the trolley car was really crowded some times. We can't wait to go back some time. smile

One rainy day our group went to the IMAX theatre and the Audobon Aquarium in the area of the Riverwalk Marketplace. The cost for both was $58. A person could pay for entry into only one or the other. Harrah’s casino, the ferry landing and the Steamboat Natchez Riverboat are all within walking distance of the marketplace as well as many of the other places and tours we wanted to take but didn't have time for. If you’re intrigued by river traffic there are many seating areas to view the large variety of ships and barges that travel up and down the Mississippi River. The Cemetery History Tour in the French Quarter was very intriguing. Our tour guide was friendly and funny (Haunted History Tours). We used the rental car to drive west to Vacherie, LA to tour the Laura Plantation in the rain. The landscape at the plantation grows a wide variety of garden and floral plants and various fruit trees. One day we drove the rental car east to Slidell, LA to tour the swamp area through Cajun Encounter Tour Company (not the same as the Cajun Pride Swamp Tours). The guide here was also funny and friendly. He did a great job providing safety, sighting wildlife and pointing out some of the more damaged areas struck by Hurricane Katrina seven years earlier. We rode on a motor boat and not the airboat which might have been more fun but have been told it was much noisier. Tours can be taken through any of the tour companies if you choose not to drive. Last, but not least, we stayed in NOLA during Mardi Gras! Absolutely loved it! And we would definitely go back again if we didn't have other resorts to see and stay at.

All of the times that I have been here I always wanted to but never took tbe time to ride the trolley until now. The cost is $1.25 plus transfer fee. Per ride or ride all day for $5. I rode each line from end to end and found it to be very cost effective and easily accessible to most tourist type "spots" especially since parking can be a problem. I even rode the ferry for my first time. There are several nice spots in a three or four block radius to the resort (walking distance).. I ate at the "Trolley Stop" and Houstons resturant. I have eaten at the resturant in the resort in the past.

I've been to New Orleans several times (Pre Katrina) and truly enjoyed the city and it's people. Planning on going Next March for a week prior to a Cruise.

Am interested in hearing about YOUR favorite restaurants and activities. We will be traveling with two other couples, some have walking disabilities. Not really interested in the super expensive or ultra-touristy places - prefer out-of-the-way spots with good food, friendly service and good vibes.
